Biography World famous sound engineer and musician, The Scientist (aka Hopeton Brown or Overton Brown) An electronics whiz designer of studio equipment from Kingston, Jamaica, The Scientist was a protégé of one of the pioneers of dub music, King Tubby. Working with King Tubby’s in the mid-1970s, The Scientist mixed his first hit record, Barrington Levy’s “Collie Weed.” By the end of the 1970s, he was the principal engineer for Channel One Studio, working his magic on a 16-track mixing board. The Scientist achieved renown in the early 1980s, producing numerous albums featuring his exceptional mixes. In 1982, he brought his talents to Tuff Gong Studio as second engineer to Errol Brown, then emigrated to the Washington, D.C. area in 1985, again enhancing albums with his sound engineering abilities. The Scientist also recorded a series of albums on the Greensleeves label in the 1980s, featuring fictional themes about his triumphs in fighting Space Invaders, Vampires, Pac-Men, and winning the World Cup. Part of The Scientist’s album, “Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires,” was used on the soundtrack of the highly popular video game, “Grand Theft Auto III.” The Scientist’s impressive discography includes over than 50 albums spanning nearly three decades. |
